How to Play Roulette
The first form of roulette was devised in 17th centuryFrance, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by hisfascination with perpetual motion devices. In the early 1800s, roulette was brought into the U.S.where, to further increase house odds, a second zero, "00", wasintroduced. Some call roulette the "King of Casino Games", probably becauseit was associated with the glamour of the casinos in Monte Carlo. There are 2 types of roulette, American andEuropean. In most roulette wheels in theUnited States but not in Europe, there is a second zero compartment marked 00,colored green. Aplayer can bet on numbers, combinations, ranges, odds/evens, and colors. The basic rules of Roulette are simple. The table layout consists of areaswhich represent a number or series of numbers. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. The bet wins if the number resulting from the spin matches thenumbers you bet upon. The wheel is divided into 38 (American) or 37 (European) sections, eachof which has walls to hold a small ball where it lands after the wheel is spun. The sections are numbered from 1 to 36, (half red and half black, half odd andhalf even) plus a green section marked 0. Theaddition of the 00 section greatly increases the odds in favor of the house. Forthis reason, Roulette is not as popular in United States casinos as it is inEurope. Numbers 1-18 are considered the lows; numbers 19-36 are thehighs. Roulette is a banking game: all bets are placed against the house. If you play black-red, odd/evenor high-low, you must place the table minimum for each & every bet. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. Straight-Up Bets - Pay 35 to 1. Place a chip on any single number. SplitBets - Pay 17 to 1. Place a chip in between any two adjacent numbers. Street (Trio or Three Number) Bets - Pay 11 to 1.Place a chip on the horizontal line across the top of the layout on any of thetwelve columns of three numbers. Quint Bet - Pays 6 to 1. The only possiblefive number grouping in the Roulette layout is 0-00-1-2-3. Double Street (SixNumber) Bets - Pay 5 to 1. Place a chip in between streets that are side byside to get all six numbers in the double streets.
