The first form of roulette was devised in 17th centuryFrance, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by hisfascination with perpetual motion devices. The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. There is a green pocket numbered 0. The bet itself is returned, so in total it is multiplied by 36. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. A wheel having a corresponding set ofnumbers is spun. The bet wins if the number resulting from the spin matches thenumbers you bet upon. The odds vary depending upon the specific type bet. The main goal of the game is to bet on the slot where theroulette ball falls. European wheels have only the 0 greensection. If Nevada rules are in force, you lose the entire even-moneybet on 0 or 00. All players placetheir bets. The dealer spins a small ball in the opposite direction of thespinning wheel. Players make bets by placingchips in various locations on the table. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. Quad (Corner)Bets - Pay 8 to 1. Place a chip between any four number groupings, and you getall four numbers in that group. Quint Bet - Pays 6 to 1. The only possiblefive number grouping in the Roulette layout is 0-00-1-2-3. Double Street (SixNumber) Bets - Pay 5 to 1. Place a chip in between streets that are side byside to get all six numbers in the double streets. Black, Red, Odd, Even, 1-18,19-36 - Pay 1 to 1. Column Bets- Pay 2 to 1. Place a chip in a box at the end of one of three columns.
