How to Play Roulette
The first form of roulette was devised in 17th centuryFrance, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by hisfascination with perpetual motion devices. In 1842, fellow Frenchmen Françoisand Louis Blanc added the "0" to the roulette wheel in order toincrease house odds. (In some forms of early American roulette the double-zero wasreplaced by an American Eagle.) In the 1800s, roulette spread all over bothEurope and the U.S., becoming one of the most famous and most popular casinogames. There are 2 types of roulette, American andEuropean. A croupier turns a round roulette wheel which has 37 or38 separately numbered pockets in which a ball must land. There is a green pocket numbered 0. The basic rules of Roulette are simple. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. A wheel having a corresponding set ofnumbers is spun. The game uses a special wheel, a betting layout, andchips. The wheel is divided into 38 (American) or 37 (European) sections, eachof which has walls to hold a small ball where it lands after the wheel is spun. The sections are numbered from 1 to 36, (half red and half black, half odd andhalf even) plus a green section marked 0. American wheels have an additional green section marked 00. Forthis reason, Roulette is not as popular in United States casinos as it is inEurope. Numbers 1-18 are considered the lows; numbers 19-36 are thehighs. If you play black-red, odd/evenor high-low, you must place the table minimum for each & every bet. All players placetheir bets. When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, the dealer willcall out the winning number and settle all bets. There are a number of series in roulette that have special names attached tothem.
