The first form of roulette was devised in 17th centuryFrance, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by hisfascination with perpetual motion devices. In the 1800s, roulette spread all over bothEurope and the U.S., becoming one of the most famous and most popular casinogames. The wheel is divided into 38 (American) or 37 (European) sections, eachof which has walls to hold a small ball where it lands after the wheel is spun.The sections are numbered from 1 to 36, (half red and half black, half odd andhalf even) plus a green section marked 0. When Atlantic City rules are used in Roulette: For any even-money bets,if the ball lands on 0 or 00, half of the amount of any even-money bet isreturned to you. If Nevada rules are in force, you lose the entire even-moneybet on 0 or 00. Numbers 1-18 are considered the lows; numbers 19-36 are thehighs. If you play black-red, odd/evenor high-low, you must place the table minimum for each & every bet. When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, the dealer willcall out the winning number and settle all bets. Players make bets by placingchips in various locations on the table. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. The ball comes to rest on one number – the winning number for thespin. Tiers("The third") - This is the name for the numbers which lie on theopposite side of the wheel between 27 and 33 including 27 and 33 themselves.The series is 27,13,26,11,30,8,23,20,5,24,16,33 (on a single zero wheel)Orphelins ("Orphans") - These numbers make up the two slices of thewheel outside the Tiers and Voisins. They contain a total of eight numbers, theOrphans comprising 17,34,6 and the Orphelins being 1,20,14,31,9. SplitBets - Pay 17 to 1. Place a chip in between any two adjacent numbers. Quint Bet - Pays 6 to 1. The only possiblefive number grouping in the Roulette layout is 0-00-1-2-3. Black, Red, Odd, Even, 1-18,19-36 - Pay 1 to 1. Column Bets- Pay 2 to 1. Place a chip in a box at the end of one of three columns.
