How to Play Roulette
In the early 1800s, roulette was brought into the U.S.where, to further increase house odds, a second zero, "00", wasintroduced. There are 2 types of roulette, American andEuropean. The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. The roulette dealer will exchange yourchips for regular chips when you are done playing. Roulette is a French word meaning"small wheel". The basic rules of Roulette are simple. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. The game uses a special wheel, a betting layout, andchips. European wheels have only the 0 greensection. American wheels have an additional green section marked 00. Theaddition of the 00 section greatly increases the odds in favor of the house. Forthis reason, Roulette is not as popular in United States casinos as it is inEurope. When Atlantic City rules are used in Roulette: For any even-money bets,if the ball lands on 0 or 00, half of the amount of any even-money bet isreturned to you. If Nevada rules are in force, you lose the entire even-moneybet on 0 or 00. Numbers 1-18 are considered the lows; numbers 19-36 are thehighs. The dealer spins a small ball in the opposite direction of thespinning wheel. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. There are a number of series in roulette that have special names attached tothem. Tiers("The third") - This is the name for the numbers which lie on theopposite side of the wheel between 27 and 33 including 27 and 33 themselves. The series is 27,13,26,11,30,8,23,20,5,24,16,33 (on a single zero wheel)Orphelins ("Orphans") - These numbers make up the two slices of thewheel outside the Tiers and Voisins. They contain a total of eight numbers, theOrphans comprising 17,34,6 and the Orphelins being 1,20,14,31,9. Quad (Corner)Bets - Pay 8 to 1. Place a chip between any four number groupings, and you getall four numbers in that group. Quint Bet - Pays 6 to 1. The only possiblefive number grouping in the Roulette layout is 0-00-1-2-3. Black, Red, Odd, Even, 1-18,19-36 - Pay 1 to 1.
