In 1842, fellow Frenchmen Françoisand Louis Blanc added the "0" to the roulette wheel in order toincrease house odds. Some call roulette the "King of Casino Games", probably becauseit was associated with the glamour of the casinos in Monte Carlo. The American roulette is divided in to 38 slots, numbered 1 through 36, plus 0 and00. The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. The main pockets arenumbered from 1 to 36 and alternate between red and black, with number 1 beingred. There is a green pocket numbered 0. In most roulette wheels in theUnited States but not in Europe, there is a second zero compartment marked 00,colored green. Aplayer can bet on numbers, combinations, ranges, odds/evens, and colors. Tiers("The third") - This is the name for the numbers which lie on theopposite side of the wheel between 27 and 33 including 27 and 33 themselves.The series is 27,13,26,11,30,8,23,20,5,24,16,33 (on a single zero wheel)Orphelins ("Orphans") - These numbers make up the two slices of thewheel outside the Tiers and Voisins. They contain a total of eight numbers, theOrphans comprising 17,34,6 and the Orphelins being 1,20,14,31,9. SplitBets - Pay 17 to 1. Place a chip in between any two adjacent numbers. Street (Trio or Three Number) Bets - Pay 11 to 1.Place a chip on the horizontal line across the top of the layout on any of thetwelve columns of three numbers. Double Street (SixNumber) Bets - Pay 5 to 1. Place a chip in between streets that are side byside to get all six numbers in the double streets. Black, Red, Odd, Even, 1-18,19-36 - Pay 1 to 1.
