The first form of roulette was devised in 17th centuryFrance, by the mathematician Blaise Pascal, who was supposedly inspired by hisfascination with perpetual motion devices. The American roulette is divided in to 38 slots, numbered 1 through 36, plus 0 and00. The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. The roulette dealer will exchange yourchips for regular chips when you are done playing. A croupier turns a round roulette wheel which has 37 or38 separately numbered pockets in which a ball must land. If a player bets on a single number and wins, the payout is35 to 1. Aplayer can bet on numbers, combinations, ranges, odds/evens, and colors. The table layout consists of areaswhich represent a number or series of numbers. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. A wheel having a corresponding set ofnumbers is spun. The game uses a special wheel, a betting layout, andchips. The wheel is divided into 38 (American) or 37 (European) sections, eachof which has walls to hold a small ball where it lands after the wheel is spun. The sections are numbered from 1 to 36, (half red and half black, half odd andhalf even) plus a green section marked 0. European wheels have only the 0 greensection. American wheels have an additional green section marked 00. If you play black-red, odd/evenor high-low, you must place the table minimum for each & every bet. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. The ball comes to rest on one number – the winning number for thespin.
