(In some forms of early American roulette the double-zero wasreplaced by an American Eagle.) The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. The main pockets arenumbered from 1 to 36 and alternate between red and black, with number 1 beingred. The table layout consists of areaswhich represent a number or series of numbers. The bet wins if the number resulting from the spin matches thenumbers you bet upon. When Atlantic City rules are used in Roulette: For any even-money bets,if the ball lands on 0 or 00, half of the amount of any even-money bet isreturned to you. Numbers 1-18 are considered the lows; numbers 19-36 are thehighs. Roulette is a banking game: all bets are placed against the house. All players placetheir bets. When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, the dealer willcall out the winning number and settle all bets. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. The ball comes to rest on one number – the winning number for thespin. Tiers("The third") - This is the name for the numbers which lie on theopposite side of the wheel between 27 and 33 including 27 and 33 themselves.The series is 27,13,26,11,30,8,23,20,5,24,16,33 (on a single zero wheel)Orphelins ("Orphans") - These numbers make up the two slices of thewheel outside the Tiers and Voisins. They contain a total of eight numbers, theOrphans comprising 17,34,6 and the Orphelins being 1,20,14,31,9. Straight-Up Bets - Pay 35 to 1. Place a chip on any single number. Quad (Corner)Bets - Pay 8 to 1. Place a chip between any four number groupings, and you getall four numbers in that group. Double Street (SixNumber) Bets - Pay 5 to 1. Place a chip in between streets that are side byside to get all six numbers in the double streets. Column Bets- Pay 2 to 1. Place a chip in a box at the end of one of three columns.
