About Roulette
In 1842, fellow Frenchmen Françoisand Louis Blanc added the "0" to the roulette wheel in order toincrease house odds. In the early 1800s, roulette was brought into the U.S.where, to further increase house odds, a second zero, "00", wasintroduced. The European roulette wheel is divided into 37 slots, numbered 1 through 36,plus 0. The roulette dealer will exchange yourchips for regular chips when you are done playing. A croupier turns a round roulette wheel which has 37 or38 separately numbered pockets in which a ball must land. In most roulette wheels in theUnited States but not in Europe, there is a second zero compartment marked 00,colored green. If a player bets on a single number and wins, the payout is35 to 1. The basic rules of Roulette are simple. Bets are placed on these numbersby putting chips on the appropriate areas. The bet wins if the number resulting from the spin matches thenumbers you bet upon. European wheels have only the 0 greensection. American wheels have an additional green section marked 00. Theaddition of the 00 section greatly increases the odds in favor of the house. All players placetheir bets. The dealer spins a small ball in the opposite direction of thespinning wheel. When the ball comes to rest in one of the slots, the dealer willcall out the winning number and settle all bets. After all bets are placed, the croupierspins the wheel in one direction and tosses the small ball in the oppositedirection. There are a number of series in roulette that have special names attached tothem. Voisins ("Neighbors") - This is a name for the numbers which liebetween 22 and 25 on the wheel including 22 and 25 themselves. The series is22,18,29,7,28,12,35,3,26,0,32,15,19,4,21,2,25 (on a single zero wheel) SplitBets - Pay 17 to 1. Place a chip in between any two adjacent numbers. Double Street (SixNumber) Bets - Pay 5 to 1. Place a chip in between streets that are side byside to get all six numbers in the double streets. Dozen Bets: 1st 12, 2nd 12, 3rd 12 - Pay 2 to 1.
